On September 14, 2017, Google, with the support of the Agency for Strategic Initiatives, announces the launch of the project “Far from Capitals,” the goal of which is to find the most active, talented and caring people living outside of Moscow and St. Petersburg, and to make their projects known throughout the country.

“We are looking for people who care about the world around them and who, independently or together with like-minded people, try to change it for the better. There are a lot of such stories in the regions,” says Dmitry Kuznetsov, head of Google Russia. “Using Google Maps and Google Search, we created the Far From Capitals platform to collect hundreds of these stories and make their heroes known.”

To become a participant, you need to fill out an application on the project platform and talk about how you are developing your city, town or village. After moderation, the application will be published on the website, and the information will be available on Google Maps.

Anyone can join the project: owner own business, director, creator of street art objects or founder of a surfing school - the main thing is that he must work in his region and make the lives of people around him better.

In October, the finalists will be determined, and after that, every user across the country will be able to vote for the most interesting projects in Google Search. To support your favorite participant, you will need to enter the query “away from capitals” in the search bar and make your choice in the list of finalists that opens. The names of the winners will be announced in early November.

It is not at all necessary to live or work in the capital to achieve success, say the project organizers. There have already been several people from different parts of Russia who prove this by their example. They have become ambassadors of the project and, by their example, invite as many people as possible to participate. Thus, Denis Umutbaev is reviving the Bashkir breed of horses near Ufa, Kostas Marsan is making films about the nature of his native Yakutia, and Natalya Nikitina opened the Kolomenskaya Pastila Museum, the traditional taste of which was almost forgotten.

The project jury will include CEO ASI Svetlana Chupsheva, musician Ilya Lagutenko, director and producer Yegor Konchalovsky, popular YouTube blogger Wylsacom, and head of the Dodo Pizza company Fyodor Ovchinnikov.

  • “ASI supports those who are looking for an opportunity to realize their ideas in business, social, cultural and scientific spheres. Every day is a number promising projects, which are created in the regions, is increasing, and this is wonderful! We hope that with the help of the project “Far from the Capitals” we will be able to inspire people to start implementing their ideas,” Svetlana Chupsheva, General Director of the Agency for Strategic Initiatives.
  • “From Moscow to our beloved Vladivostok is more than nine thousand kilometers. One can only guess how many talented people live in this vast territory. And even if some of these people talk about their affairs through the Google project “Far from Capitals,” we will learn many amazing things about our country. I’m glad to be part of this project,” Ilya Lagutenko.
  • “I agreed to take part in this project because I am very curious to find out what heroes (and I am sure there are many!) live and work in modern Russia. Without decorations and “Hollywood” budgets, they create something new and bright here, rather than going abroad. It’s good that now there is interest and a desire to develop talented initiatives in our own land. The project is also interesting from an educational point of view,” Yegor Konchalovsky.
